Hi Finnian,
In an email, you would use 'enquiry'.
An enquiry is a question (e.g. I am enquiring about your opening times)
An inquiry is an investigation into something. For example, if someone dies in suspicious circumstances, or the government makes a mistake, there is an inquiry.
Hope this helps
