While the full stop indicates where to pause in a sentence, how should we approach less conventional punctuation when reciting her poem?
She freights and weights words that resonate in the soul, and she gives them capital letters. And sometimes they don't seem worthy of capitalization, but I tell you, they're not frivolous. It's not bad writing.
Emily Dickinson is deliberately capitalizing often abstract ideas and making them concrete. She'll even anthropomorphize ideas; she'll personify. We'll see that in death when death starts courting her in one of the most famous poems.
And another thing that she does is these dashes, parentheses, that can be quite jarring.
