I read that words like "ich" are pronounced "iSH", like in "SHower". However, I have just read in the same book (just the next page) that the word "auch" is pronounced different: "ch" here would sound like the French/German "r" (from throat). Could someone clarify this point? I would like to understand how to pronounce "ch" correctly. Thank you very much.

No, SHower is like "sch" in German, the ch in "ich" is differently pronounced than SHower and "auch"
There are two different pronounciations of "ch"

Ich is the sound on the left (/c/), auch the sound on the right (/x/)

Hi Ignacio, what you've read is not wrong. I don't speak German fluently myself, but I can tell you that in my family's variety of German (southwest Germany, close to France & Switzerland), the ch in ich does sound like the sh in shower. That is, however, not the majority pronunciation in Germany, as others have pointed out. To the best of my knowledge, the ch in auch has the same pronunciation everywhere, albeit not the same one in auch. It is much like the j in Peninsular Spanish (but not quite the same).
