A Special Relationship: Anglo-American Relations

Hi everyone, I'm a student and next week I'm going to have an oral (length around 6 minutes) about ''the special relationship between the United States and Great britain''.

So I thought it will be interesting to know your opinions about that subject :).

When do you think the Anglo-American relationship was the best?

On contrary when that relationship was the worst?

Also do you think the fact that the United-states and Great Britain have the same language, help them to have a better relationship with each other?

To my mind, I think I will talk during my oral of ''War of Independence (1776-1781)'' ''the relationship between the cold war '' ''the Vietnam war'', ''the relationship between Ronal Reagan and Margaret Thatcher'' and to conclude '' the relationship of that two countries nowadays''

Manon, please be awre that Great Britain is an island, it is not the name of the country. We are the United Kingdom. If you are giving a presentation this might be important, so you should speak about the Anglo-American relationship; or the US-UK relationship.

Manon, I think the most important example of that special relationship is the Second World War.  The only undefeated countries at that time were the US and the UK and together they preserved freedom for the world.

Do not forget Churchill and Roosevelt.  The armies of the two countries were put under Allied Joint Command.

As an aside for our French friends, of whom you are one, let us not forget that the British government accommodated de Gaulle in England, where he set up Free France.

WWII, the 70th anniversary of whose victory was celebrated by all the major powers this past summer with much fanfare and emotion, is the one obvious thing that you should emphasise right from the start of your presentation.  The whole world was being threatened by Hitler and the Axis powers. It was the most severe crisis faced by the human race in the 20th century. The US and the UK joined hands and saved the world.

We share much with the UK, like close cousins. Often we view the world's events the same way (often, not always.) This you already know. But an possibly an interesting side-note is that at times the over-all mood of the US has not always been pro-UK. In the early part of the 20th century there was a great influx of immigrants from Ireland and Germany. So much so there was a time when the US helped Germany early during WWI.  Most of the time we are close allies, but we have had our squabbles over history.
