[for intermediate/advanced learners] Cantonese subtitled short videos!

Dear all,

When I chatted with Cantonese learners who can read Chinese characters, I found that they were frustrated because the subtitles are in written form (which follows "standard Chinese/Mandarin"), and it does not correspond to Cantonese dialogues.

So I put Cantonese subtitles on 2 short videos about Hong Kong (no infringement of copyright~~ it is made by RTHK!!) on Youtube :-D. Here are the links:

<a target="_blank" href="https://youtu.be/fRVwYgkNYcw" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; color: rgb(22, 122, 198); font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; line-height: 15.6px; background: rgb(255, 255, 255);">https://youtu.be/fRVwYgkNYcw</a>;

<a target="_blank" href="https://youtu.be/C8iwq3tI6PQ" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; color: rgb(22, 122, 198); font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; line-height: 15.6px; background: rgb(255, 255, 255);">https://youtu.be/C8iwq3tI6PQ</a>;

If you want to see the subtitles, remember to turn the CC on!

If you have anything cultural or societal in mind which needs Cantonese subtitles (but not too long, please... less than 3 minutes long please... very tiring to transcribe and type >_<") Please let me know!

Enjoy!

Cheers

Alex

There are actually quite a few youtube channels that have Cantonese subs:

Old stuff is in Cantonese subs but newer content seems to be written

Teaching Hong Kongers how to get rid of "Chinglish" but ironically you can use this to learn the original idioms it comes from as well.

Probably my favorite channel

Hey Alexandra,

Thank you for taking the time to transcribe these TV clips. It is really hard to find videos with subtitles in spoken Cantonese.

I especially liked the TV short about discrimination. I can really relate to Mona, since I'm a Dutch born Chinese.

Just wanted to let you know that I appreciate the work you put into these videos. ; )

Dear all,

This time I uploaded a video (a drama from RTHK again haha) about discrimination with Cantonese subtitles~

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBbS0-dWwZ0

You may notice something in the video:

1. Raj: he uses 'compound' pronunciation like zik1 hai6 --> ze-ai16

2. a couple of colloquial expression from Uncle Mark such as laa2 lei6 (irritating to the tongue which means really expensive)

3. recognizable "n" initial consonant from Mona such as "NNei5" (you) which is losing ground in everyday Hong Kong Cantonese

Enjoy~~ :-)

Cheers

Alex
