what's the difference between holiday and vacation?

'Holiday' is the word used in the UK and 'Vacation' is American.
You might hear American people use the word 'holiday' but you'll very very rarely hear people in England say 'vacation'
Hope that helps :)

“Holiday” is used in American English, but only in the sense of a public holiday or a religious holiday.
“Vacation” is used to refer to when an individual (and family) takes time off from work. “Vacation” often implies travel or some kind of recreational activity.
