Culture discussion: Birthdays

Hello!

Today is my birthday. Birthdays are celebrated in many ways in the US.

Usually for young people they have a party. There is a cake and punch ( a sugary, fruity drink). The friends brings gifts. And they play games, and do activities. Then they eat cake and the birthday boy or girl opens his presents.

Adults or older people can have parties, but it usually is more exciting for children. Adults can invite friends for a informal party. The friends give gifts, send birthday messages, or go eat dinner at a restaurant. There are many things they can do.

Sometimes elderly people have really big birthday parties to celebrate their long life. That is always fun because you can watch them blow out many candles.

Today, my friend is taking me to my favorite restaurant and we will go shopping afterwards.

I also want to know, how do you celebrate a birthday in your country? Please let me know!

I've never "celebrated" my birthday, and I never understand people who do. I never the saw the point in celebrating the fact that I am one year older and one year closer to death. Thus far, I haven't accomplished anything extraordinary worth celebrating. And for me, passing another year of standard and ordinary life is not much of an accomplishment worth throwing a party for. I just spend my birthdays alone contemplating my life,  my death, my goals and priorities, and the experiences and changes I underwent in that year.
