Language exchange site or a dating site?

Hello everyone,

When I became a member of the Italki group I was and still am really excited about the fact that one can learn any language ,interact in that concerned language with people from all over the world.

What bothers me is the fact that some members use this platform as a dating site. It is not the best thing to be asked about your age only when you have just started talking (not talking since few weeks or months).

Although I do ignore such messages and requests, it still drives me up the wall.

Does anyone face this too? What do you do in this case?

I'm new here. I try to open my mind to talk to people. Few days ago a guy from the USA asked me to skype with him and I accepted cause i wanna practice speaking skill. Hmm when i answered the video call from him, he took his pants off and started masturbating.... At that moment I was sitting next to my niece. I got really angry after that. What a shame !

Yes, I face this issue as well. I normally just ignore it, and they stop messaging me.

Umm, I hope nobody takes this the wrong way, but why don't people just display their age? What's the problem? Do you want to talk to people who'll stop interacting with you once they figure out you're over 30? I sure wouldn't want to. Just state your age. Such people won't contact you to begin with. Good riddance.

ETA: I also don't want to sound like I'm blaming the victim. Obviously, there are plenty of creeps on the Internet, and this forum is no exception. If you're a pretty young girl, creeps are particularly likely to be interested in you. In that case, perhaps avoid posting a photo? If all else fails, talk only to other women and girls. But if you're in your 30s or older, then simply stating your age will serve as a creep-repellent. It won't necessarily be 100% effective, but like a mosquito-repellent, you'll deal with significantly fewer "bites" if you use it than if you don't. So why not use it?

Yes I know what you mean and that sucks, it would be nice if italki provides us some tools to show if that user is a time waster or not.

But since we don't have a suggestion page, it proves that they don't give a fuck about our needs.

After reading Ha's comment, my perspective on having a video call on the first meeting, especially with opposite gender completely changed. So, a video call at the first meeting should not be advisable. First, the intention and behaviour of that person should be calculated by exchanging text message and then audio call and then if it is confirmed that the person is no harm and a good guy, then a video call is good to go with. So a procedure should be followed, I think.
