My Experience with Japanese Language Exchange Partners

Just want to share some observations I've had so far with Japanese language exchange partners-and by this, I mean more specifically, native Japanese speakers from Japan.  Of course, each individual is different in their own unique way but here are some of the common denominators:

1)Their English level is very often understated.  No surprise here I guess.  Japanese people in general, are very humble.  When I get a message from someone who is interested in becoming a language partner, they often start with "I can't speak English at all" or "My English level is very low and I am not good in conversation.." I guess this could be subjective and maybe their bar is that much higher, but by my standards,  100% of the time, these statements have been false.  I find that their English fluency is quite the opposite.  They are able to have a conversation in a very fluid and natural way.  I am also very surprised by the vocabulary that come out of these conversations.  So far, everyone's English level >  my Japanese level.

2)They are very conscientious about making sure both parties benefit from the chat. 50% Japanese/ 50% English.  Often times, they will come with material specifically tailored for me

3)They are always punctual, where as I've been late a few times..

4)They are VERY forgiving and patient when it comes to my Japanese language output (lack of) skills.  They really try very hard to understand what I'm trying to say-and make corrections when necessary.

5)At the end of the chat, they never fail to express their gratitude-as if they're the only ones benefiting from the language exchange

Dunno-maybe I got lucky but I suspect this is likely the majority here.  Anyone else have a similar experience?  Or different experience?

On a side note-I think it would be cool for iTalki to have a rating system for language partners as well.

Agreed. Very positive experiences, but sometimes it's hard to find one.

This is a lovely note.

But i'm not surprised. My experience with people from Japan has always been very positive and most enjoyable, be it studying together in a class, sharing a household, or being served in a Japanese restaurant.

I believe this is attributable to some kind of common quality shared by the people. I can't put my finger on what it is. It just seems that their default mode is 'help' when interacting with others.

Hello Roy,

I was impressed that you appreciated our people positively, and I'm very proud of them!

I assume that you learnt Japanese a lot through these chat.
