Best experience while you were travelling? Tell me a story!

Hi all,

I think travel and culture are largely connected to languages... so I have a question.  I would love to learn about all the wonderful things there are to see and do or experience in other countries. As one of the reasons I study is that I want to travel.

I not talking about recommendations just something that you found amusing or enjoyable.

Maybe you have a story to share of something that happened...I would love to hear it! :)

Note: I'm making this discussion for learning English, as this way, I can read your responses.

When it comes to international travel, I have heaps of memorable experience. But what pops up in my mind right now is about Thailand. I went there when the country was mourning for the loss of their King and I found out that the Thai did it a year long. They mostly wear black outfits when they go to school, to work even to tourist spots, even us the tourists were obliged to do so. To find out more about it you can read here as it is too much to write https://www.tripsavvy.com/the-thailand-mourning-period-4103185

Good day, mate.

How it's hanging?

My best travelling experience so far is when I went to Kashgar, one of the westernmost city in China. It has a totally different atmosphere from the coastal area. The locals are Uyghurs (a Turkic ethnic group), and they're Moslem. They speak Uyghur, so my Chinese Mandarin wouldn't help me at all.

I wore Hijab, long sleeves, and trousers to get around. I went with my friend who looks like a Russian. When we hung around the city, the locals considered me as a tourist, while they thought my friend was my tour guide.

We went there in May, so the weather wasn't too hot and dry.

We ate mutton kebabs, naan (a leavened, oven-baked flatbread), yoghurt, and herb tea every day. I had never liked eating mutton before, but the kebabs I had for those 5 days was so delicious that I could eat more than one skewer, perhaps because they were served with cumin (I love the smell of cumin).

There are three places that I like the most.

We went to Id Kah Mosque, the largest mosque in China. I like the architecture, unfortunately, we couldn't manage to get into the mosque. Otherwise, it would be a great study comparison for me (I live in the largest Moslem country in the world, with some interesting Mosque architecture and interior design.)

We also explored the Old City, I fell in love with the locals. They were nice and friendly, especially old people and children. I was asked several times what nationality I am, and when they knew that I came from Indonesia, they thought I was a Moslem as well.

Last but not least, we went to Sunday Market, where we could buy souvenirs and eat their delicacies.

It is the most unforgettable experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life.
