learn more words vs learn more meanings of words Every word has several meanings, sometimes too many meanings. What do you think is the right approach to learn more words but only one meaning or fewer words but with many different meanings?

Alycia, I totally agree with you, in context only.

This helps me understand new words:

Jesus & Alycia,

Thanks for your answers.

I wonder if there is here somebody who learn several meanings at time, especially at first time.

I learn new words when I encounter them in a text. So I learn the meaning of this word in the context and practice using this word in this meaning. If I later meet the same word where it's used in a different meaning, I learn using it in this meaning too. Memorizing all the meanings of one word simultaneously and especially without context can be confusing and not very useful.

On a side note, here is the word "do" in some sentences where it has different meanings...

"I got my nails done"

"What do you do?"

"I'm done talking"

"I'll do the dishes"

"He was done to death"

"She did her hair"

"I would do her"

"This won't do"

"I don't do Fridays"

Or the word "get"...

"He got killed"

"I don't get it"

"How to get to the airport?"

"This gag gets me every time"

"I got to go"

"I never got to see another country"

"Don't get into trouble"

"It won't get you anywhere"

"I got no money"

"Don't let it get to you"

"I can't get that song out of my head, it's so catchy"

"I don't know what to get my girlfriend for Christmas"

"I got it for my birthday"

Sometimes I wonder if one can get through life if the only verbs they know are "do" and "get". And sometimes I think that yes, one can do that...

@Val

Oh, I learn one meaning at a time with each one word.

Jesus,

when you learn a new word, do you learn one particular meaning at the time, or several meanings? It is the question.
