Hello!! In my experience, It's not necessary to travel for learning a new language, the most important is the practice!
In my experience it depends where you live. Now a nearby holiday resort, mainly visited by Germans gives me opportunities 10 mins walk away.
Holidays are good chances for practice, but less so with busy locals, who are not relaxed on holiday.
For this reason, I maintained my German for 25 years, without once setting foot in Germany nor taking a single class. Hardly any of my practice occurred in Germany after it failed to give me the positive immersive experience I hoped for
Javier is right, holiday travel is insufficient alone to reinforce learning. I feel sorry too, for all those Brits who begin language classes in autumn, only to feel humiliated and crushed when every waiter replies back in English!
They might be consoled if they knew this kept happening to my first Italki Spanish teacher, a native of Madrid when she visited a Mallorcan resort!!
