What is your attitude towards a person who smokes a lot?

I apologize If I am offensive, but I started this discussion because recently in my girlfriend's house lives a person who smokes a lot and this bothers me a lot. She smokes inside the house and every 30 minutes. My girlfriend's house smells very bad. I don´t like to live with a person who smokes and even I don´t like to stay near a smoker. She/he smells very bad, her/him hair, her/him breath,  her/him hands. Also, this is unhealthy and even if you don´t smoke, if you live with a person who smokes. you are breathing this toxic air, and this hurts your lungs. Sometimes I try to no making bad gestures but I can´t, because this disgusting me a lot. Many say that I am picky because when I see a person who is smoking I run away from him or her, If I am walking in the street and a person is smoking ahead of me I change to the another side for not breathing its toxic air. The first thing I ask a woman is if she smokes, because I don´t like to have a couple who smokes. I would like that a lot of people quit this bad habit not only for his/her own health, but also for the sake of the others around him/her. What do you suggest in order to help people to quit this bad habit? if you are a smoker what is the attitude of the people around you?

Hello, Doris Day good for you, Some people here know that it is disrespectful smoke near at someone who doesn´t smoke. However, there are a lot of impolite people who smoke everywhere even they feel angry when you show your disgusting towards her/him bad habit, so the best you can do is stay away from these people. I don´t hate smokers, I hate his/her bad habit. I have known people who have quit to this. I am worried about children who have smoker parents because they fully absorb this toxic air and maybe in the future they will suffer a lot due to their irresponsible parents.

Hello Charlotte thanks for writing here. It is good that people in your country are polite, but here some people are impolite and selfish, if you say a person that it bothers you not all of them are comprehensives many will ignore your disgusting, and they will go on doing the same. She must know that a person who is sick should not smoke by a second hand. I don´t know if my nose is very sensitive but even when a person is not smoking around you, you know that a person smoked because he/she smells very bad no matter if they brush her teeth or whatever she/he does. I get a sneeze when I am near a person who is a smoker.

Hello, MCS thank you I learned new words in your comment. However it is not her house, It is my girlfriend's house, her aunt is her guest so I think she has the right to say her that in her house  is not allowed to smoke inside. I don´t understand her fears because it is not her aunt house, and it also bothers her. Usually I don´t visit smoker's house because you are right they are kings/queens in their own houses, and I can´t stand their stench of ciggy smoke!. So when a person who is a smoker or have smokers inside his/her house invites me to go inside I reject that invitation because I don´t want to smoke by a second hand. And the situation is more complicated than that because my mother in law is sick and her own sister doesn´t care about my mother in law's health. Therefore,I can´t go outside with my girlfriend because she has to nurse her mother. I opt to stay away from my girlfriend's house until her aunt return to her house. I have had enough to say her that she should say her aunt to smoke outside, but she doesn´t listen to me. Fortunately yesterday her aunt goes to another place and I take advantage of this and I visit my girlfriend.

I do not smoke myself and personally i would never date a smoker. However I am happy for people to smoke around me as long as they are courteous and smoke by an open window and not in very small spaces.

There is nothing wrong with asking a smoker to open a window etc to smoke. Most people who have been around me have been polite and have asked me if I mind or not. If it bothers you ask them to smoke by a door or elsewhere. It probably won't offend them, they will have just probbly not realised that it bothers you.

There are rules here that are unreasonable. Specifically, sometimes one is not allowed to smoke even outside on a property even when they are not hurting anyone else. I do understand rules stating one can't smoke in a restaurant, train, bus, etc.
