Vietnam, my country, also has Ghost month, we call it Tháng cô hồn in Vietnamese. As traditional view, you should not do important things in this month such as starting up a business, organizing wedding,...or somethings like that. Unfortunately, my beloved cat died at this time of 2 years ago :((

So Interesting and I am curious about Ghost Month. I knew firstly about Ghost Month from movie "The Maid" about Maid did bad forbidden things in that month and got cursed so she could see ghost.

We have something similar in Javanese which we called "sekatenan" if i am not wrong, and it is counted by javanese moslem calendar.

Nice topic btw :)

It used to be called 'All Hallows Eve' though and is thought to have come from the pagan celtic festival, Samhain. During Samhain, it's thought that spirits can easily roam the earth on this night (from what I understand). It became christianized at some point and turned into "All Hallows Eve", also called "All Saints Day".

We don't have a day to honor death or those that have passed like, say, Dia de los muertos, but October is generally full of ghost stories, ghost sitings and investigations on tv. People visit haunted places and graveyards. I think many people enjoy the creepy and even dark aspect of the holiday. Being scared and creeped out. For some it's completely ignored as it is often associated with witchcraft. If you can, watch the 1993 movie 'Hocus Pocus'. It's a true classic most of my generation here in the States is obsessed with!

In the US we have Halloween, Oct.31. It's become a heavily marketed "holiday" (you don't actually get the day off) where many people and most kids dress up as something. Kids go door to door saying "trick or treat" asking for candy that each house has ready for them. Stores sell cute looking ghosts and pumpkins and witches, also scary or creepy props or even very gorey and bloody looking props. We carve faces onto pumpkins and gourds and put a light inside them on halloween night. I always decorate my house to be as scary and creepy as possible. Lots of fake spiderwebs, skeletons, ghosts, bats, fog, creepy lighting, fake gravestones and of course pumpkins. Every city has haunted houses to go to and some even have haunted corn mazes to walk through or real (if you believe in ghosts) haunted places to visit like old hospitals, old prisons, places where someone(s) died and not passed on. Some peoples houses are decorated to scare everyone while some look cute with glittery orange, purple, green, and black objects (Halloween's colors). It's become a marketing ploy more than anything else. Companies make a huge amount of money selling Halloween decorations in the US.

Yes, of course. In Italy we have the 2th November that is named "Giorno dei Morti"/Deads Day. It's a national vacation as we don't work, but first of all, it's a Catholic ritual in which all people go to cemeteries to visit their dead parents.

We stay with family and we have a traditional lunch with cheakpea soup and some particular sweets called "Pan dei morti"/ Deads bread. These are little homestyle cookies made with almonds.
