Ivy, in English if a woman says she has a girl it means that she is a mother and her child is female. It would be better to say "I have a female dog...". Dogs are wonderful. They love their owners if the owners are good to them. They even know when you are sad and they always try to make you feel better. Some dogs are better friends than some people. You are lucky to have such a good dog. 

I have a female dog, her name is <em>Perla</em>, but we had 2 dogs, the another died, he was a male called <em>Coke</em>.

My cat likes dogs. I tolerate them.
