A quick question for you. Which of the following is correct? And why?

I think 'are' is correct because 'police' means a group of people and its verb should be plural, but I've seen the sentence like 'the police is ___' just once if I remember correctly.

are - police is here a collective nooun and there is no distinct plural for police (singular and plural)
