The meaning of 'ahlan' and it's reply

ما معنى أهلا و ما جوابه؟

So I know that when people say 'ahlan wa sahlan' it means 'welcome'. But when my teacher come across me in the corridor he'd say this to me: 'ahlan'. I don't think it means 'welcome' in this case because that just doesn't make any sense. My guess is he's saying 'hello'. If that is correct what should I say to him in reply? Ahlan bik?

Ahlan أهلا in Arabic means Hello / Hi

You can answer back Ahlan, or you can say "Ahlan ya Ustath" أهلا يا أستاذ (Hello teacher)

You can say also Marhaban مَرْحَبًا as a reply.

normaly when a muslim meet another muslim, the first thing to say is السلام عليكم not أهلا, but unfortunatly this new world has been diffused to the our societies, you can answer it back with itself.

yeah you're right you can say "ahlan bik" because "ahlan" or " ahlan wa sahlan " always coming as " welcome" in English

and if you want to say hello in Arabic you shall say " marhaban " ...

note : you won't see anyone saying " ahlan " to say hello .
