Careers day
Introduction
The aim of this report is to examine how successful was the careers day organised by our college. It will also include its drawbacks and a variety of recommendations for future events like this one.
Upsides
According to a survey conducted amongst students, three quarters of those surveyed found this year’s careers day rather useful and helpful. Not only did the event include theory about how to identify suitable jobs, but it also organised practical and dynamic activities in which students performed different roles in a variety of scenarios. Additionally, they got the opportunity to practise mock interviews with actual directors from well-known companies, such as Nike, Primark, and so on.
Downsides
However, one of the weaknesses of the event was that attendees spent too much time learning how to be articulate in regards to writing job applications. A considerable proportion of those surveyed expressed that applying for a job is rather complex and it was a very unworkable idea to attempt to get a brief idea about how to do it in a single day. Had students missed this workshop, they would have benefited more from the rest of activities.
Suggestions for the future
I would strongly recommend including workshops in which staff from different professions recount their experiences, hence students would understand how real situations are at work. I, for one, think that those proffesional employees who attended next year’s event, would be able to convey a compelling message that would help students decide which path they want to choose.
