6 Tones in Vietnamese
There are six (6) tones in Vietnamese.
Level tone = ngang ( no mark)
Mid falling tone = huyền ( \)
Mid falling tone + short rising tone = hỏi (?)
Slight falling tone + long rising tone = ngã (~)
High rísing tone = sắc (/)
Low falling tone = nặng (.)
Ok, now, I heard two ways with hỏi. I was told that the "hỏi" was mid rising and short falling tone by another Viet person. I was also told that the southern dialect has six tones while the northern dialect has only five dialects.
