M.J. - I think there are two difficult skills in having a conversation. First is to plan what to say and understand the meaning of the words in the answers (which doesn't need audio), second is to pronounce things clearly and recognize the words while listening (which requires audio). I think text chat in Pinyin is a way to focus on addressing the first difficult skill, without worrying about the second difficult skill at the same time. Later, when I am good at having text conversations (during which I have enough time to plan and draft and redraft and consult dictionaries) then I can practice more live conversations with audio (during which I have to answer in real time, or my partnew will get bored). So my priority in Chinese is to focus on the first difficult skill using text chat, preferably in Pinyin just because it is faster. Learning to read and write Hanzi is a third difficult skill, which I am studying in a different way in a different place. Maybe your priority in Learning English is the second skill, with audio.
