Can someone explain why in Spanish 'a dar' is used in the expression I went for a walk? The translation I used was - fui a dar un paseo

Hi. I’m by no means an expert (yet!) en Español but I think the verb dar means to give or to take. We could ‘take a walk by the river’ for example hence voy a dar. 🥳
