In number 1 we are talking about a particular situation or choice at this time. In number 2 when we say “ I prefer....” we are talking about a preference that is always true really. Example: I prefer watching movies at the cinema rather than at home. This preference is probably always going to be true throughout a person’s life. It’s not quite so simple or cut and dried as this, but it’s a useful generalization. 🙏
