Both are correct—either hang on, hold on, wait, or just a second. Language is a lot more flexible than people sometimes think. I say this as a native speaker of English in my mid 50s with high academic achievement.

Hey When someone is walking and you want to call out to them then I believe “hold on” is used in this case! “Hang on” is typically used to indicate to another person to “wait for a second.” Hope this helps :)
