'To cut corners' can mean a) do something in the easiest or least expensive way, often sacrificing quality in the process. 'Cutting corners in production led to a definite loss in product quality. b) also in an illegal sense. 'If the accountants cut corners, the auditors are sure to find out.'
You can also use 'to take shortcuts.'

Marie-Hélène is correct, but it can also mean to use poor quality materials in a job to save money. Example:
The building collapsed because the builder cut corners by using sub-standard concrete.
