A saying is a short, commonly known expression which usually offers advice or wisdom. Proverbs, mottos and maxims are types of sayings. Pretty much, i would say that proverbs is more of a sayings/ tales/maxim. Motto wouldnt fit as its more of a pledge/ intent/motivation etc hope this helps :)
