Yes, it is perfectly correct. The rumours have proven true. The rumours have been proven true. Both are fine

"The rumors have proven true." or "The rumors have proven to be true". :)

So, the rumors ARE true. (Emphasize the are when this is said) The rumors are now a fact. The rumors are now facts. So, it wasn't a rumor it was the truth.
