since knowledge is an uncountable noun, why can we say "a knowledge of English"? thx!! Why can we say "a knowledge of English"? isn't it that knowledge is an uncontable noun?? thank you!

i havnt heard this use really. but most probably here, a means a bit, at all, any.

It's a quick way of saying: He has a fair knowledge of English. Here, "knowledge" means understanding.
