What's the difference among penetrate, pierce and puncture?
I would like to know more about these vocabulary, and how they are used like body-piercing, lumbar puncture and X-ray penetrate body. Can I replace them with others? why?

The difference between penetrate, pierce and puncture. I have found it best to think of them this way:
Penetrate: 'To go completely, into, or through something.'
Pierce: 'To go through just the outer most membrane or the first layer'
Puncture: 'To break the first layer, but not go through.'
