tomar .. por
Is this phrase the same as the English version 'take .. for'? Can anyone give me an example? Thanks a lot!

Without knowing the meaning of the phrase that you use "tomar ... por", I think is the same as "take... for " in English in the sense of confusion.
"TOMAR a alguien POR tonto" (take someone for a fool).
In Spanish there're, however, other ways to use "tomar...por" with a different meaning:
"TOMAR POR la fuerza algo" (take something by force)
"TOMAR un alimento POR hambre" (take a food for hungry)
"TOMAR el pedido POR teléfono" (take the order on the phone)
