As an English teacher I am well aware of the history of phonics as a method of teaching children to read , using letter-sounds and basic spelling rules . Words that are exceptions to the rules are not presented until the student has gained confidence in the written language. In the 1980's a new system of teaching reading was introduced that focused on word recognition. My personal opinion is that phonics is the best way to learn to read.
