Focus on conversation. Read dialogues from textbooks, listen to the CD. Find native speakers either online or in the real world and talk about yourself or other people. Talk to yourself in English and try to use new vocabulary you learned. Hire a tutor on italki or real life. Prepare for the meetings. Something I like to do is every few months write about myself in Chinese and either sow it to a native speaker or read it aloud to my tutor or both. My vocabulary gets better as time goes on. There is no easy road to success. Try every path you can.
