Hi, I think it depends on the language you are studying, and how you learn.
When I was learning Japanese (kanji) I made flashcards using index cards. On one side I wrote the word in kanji, and on the other I wrote the pronounciation, other words using the same kanji and some example sentences like you have done in your vocab notebook. These were fairly decent sized, and I kept them all in a ziplock bag.
This might work for you. Alternatively, buy some Japanese stationary items designed for language learning. There are many kinds out there, and there is probably something you would find that is a good compromise between flashcards and vocab notebooks.
In the end, these things are just an aid. They help you revise, but unless you learn visually, they don't particularly make it easier to learn vocabulary. I found the same effects from rote learning: just writing words over and over again on scraps of paper, and actually found the whole exercise of making the cards a waste of time. (I had to do it for school though).
