To those who speak more than two foreign languages. Did it ever happen to you that you start a sentence in one language and finish it in another one? Did you ever find it difficult to remember to what language does some word belong to? Did you ever feel that the new language you've just started to learn is squeezing out previous languages? Or it's only me and I'm trying to find an excuse to quit learning?))

sometimes I mix English with Spanish without even realizing I am doing it

I think when you've spoken a language your whole life, there's little worry of losing it by learning other languages. This is especially true if you still live in a country where your native language is spoken or have constant conversations with family/friends in this language. At work I'm forced to always speak English 8 hours a day. In my apartment after work and especially on the weekends, I can read, type and listen to Spanish, French and Italian. I do think it's easy to mix 2nd and 3rd languages up in your head if there's really close meanings. For example, take the word "Because" in these languages: (Parce que, Porque and Perché). It's really easy for me to accidently mix these words up when trying to speak or think in these languages. The trick is slowing down your mind, and as Peachey said, the need to really concentrate.

You just need to concentrate. :) I think the biggest difficulty is when you are learning a third language, because your brain may divide the languages into "my language / other language" and that's all. That is, in trying to speak the third language, it's the second language which intrudes. I've sometimes forgotten the English word and could only think of the word in French or Italian. Again, a little concentration helps - switching languages is like switching gears, or even changing channels or walking from one room to another. I've never felt that one language could mentally squeeze another one out. ;) So there's no excuse to stop learning!
