Coloring out of the lines is an expression used to mean that a person is thinking or doing something creative. Oftentimes, this means that a person is doing something that most people would not feel comfortable doing as it is outside of what is considered normal in a certain social settings. If you are speaking from a literal standpoint, it means to color outside of the lines of a drawing. I hope this helps!
