Should it be 'in earliest times' or 'in earliest ages'? Historians can't tell us when or where or how the first food was cooked. In earliest TIMES/AGES ,people had eaten their food uncooked ,and fire was used only to provide heat and light. Should it be 'in earliest times' or 'in earliest ages'?

Historians can't tell us when or where or how the first food was cooked. In PREHISTORIC TIMES ,people ATE their food uncooked ,and fire was used only to provide heat and light. "Earliest" is incorrect. BTW, I disagree with this statement. I'm sure people have always known how to cook.

It seems to me that either should be fine.
