Here in the United States, the subjjunctive is still widely used. In some other English-speaking countries, people often do not use the subjunctive.
If I WERE handsome, I WOULD have many girlfriends, but I am very ugly.
If everyone WERE nice, there WOULD be peace on Earth, but most people are not very nice.
If this WERE Friday, many workers WOULD say "TGIF" (Thank God It's Friday), but today is actually Sunday.

Was is singular and applies to one person.
Were is plural and applies to more than one person. (except in singular "you were")
eg I was ready, but you three were not ready.
"Were" is also the past subjunctive of the verb "to be" for all persons
i.e. "If I were in charge, I would fire her." "If she were here, you would see her." "I wish I were rich."
WAS is singular and WERE is plural.
