What does the phrase "Best laid plans ofmice and men" mean? Could someone explain?

It means that even the most carefully prepared plans can go wrong. If memory serves me right, it was taken from a very famous poem in the late 1700s.

UnoUmiOnNo is right. It comes from the Robert Burns poem - "To a Mouse". 1785.
