Remember to say please. ;) The original expression is "brick by brick". "He built his own house brick by brick." "The villagers rebuilt their ruined village brick by brick." This means that every single part of the (re)building process - every brick - was done with care and attention. "Brick by boring brick" suggests that the work was long and dull.
