Use "food" when you're talking generally (i.e. most of the time) and not distinguishing between types: They make really good food in Japan. Our food arrived at the table after 40 minutes of waiting. You should try to eat more healthy food. Use "foods" when you need to distinguish between several different types, or when you're emphasising the individuality of the foods: There are so many fatty and greasy foods available nowadays. There were foods from all around the world. The most popular foods in Britain often come from overseas.
