What do application engineers do in auto industry? Could anybody explain to me what exactly application engineers do ?

I work in the automotive industry and I have never met one. But I would have to guess that they design computer programs, software, and apps for cars. There is a lot of software involved in automobiles today. I think their job is to design that software and make sure it works with the other programs already used in the car.
