How do you say "I play *musical instrument*" in Japanese? For example "I play the violin".

[Forgive the Romaji; no Japanese input on this computer]
Is yaru always more casual than suru? I have yet to totally understand the difference between the two.
It seems like all stringed instruments (even when played con arco, with a bow) are hikimasu, tataimasu is to strike so it's used for percussion, and fukimasu is to blow, right?

I would say 私は楽器を演奏します[がっきをえんそうします]。for "I play musical instrument" and for "I play violin", 私はバイオリンを弾きます[ひきます]。(In my opinion, バイオリンをやっています sounds casual, and you can also say バイオリンがひけます(= I can play...) or バイオリンをならっています(= I learn ...) "Play" has various translations depending on the instrument. (Ex. ピアノをひく、トランペットをふく、ドラムをたたく). I hope you understand this.
