What's the difference between 'fit for' and 'suitable for'? Is there any difference I should be careful when I use them, for example, as in 'The lake ten miles north of our town is not fit/suitable for drinking because of the recent chemical discharge.'?

They have a similar meaning, but different origins. That should tell you when you should use one and not the other.
