Confusion about Murray and Marry,name in the UK and the US.

Okay,Back to the point.
When I was watching the match on live,I have one question about the name of Andy Murray,who is a Tennis player in the UK.
The sound of Murray and Marry is quite similar,so I was wondering if a boy avoids have a name of Murray,since it sounds like Marry,and obviously Marry is a girl's name.

In addition to that ,i am also confused about the English name in the UK and the USA.
Many of my friends named Andy is a British,so is it a typical name of British?
Are there some fixed rules for names in the UK and the USA.
I mean if i can judge a person whether he or she is a British or an American according to his or her name sometimes?

"The sound of Murray and Marry is quite similar..." no, they are not similar. "Murray" has a short sound (as in "up"), whereas "Mary"(spelling!) has a long sound. As a native speaker, I would never think these names sound the same.

In English, some names are unisex (eg. Bryce, Dale, Leigh, Blair), and some shortened versions become unisex (eg. Samuel/Samantha - Sam; Joseph/Joanne - Jo(e), Andrew/Andrea - Andy).  However, in most cases you would know if the person is male or female based on the name... still, we try not to jump to conclusions. ;)

In this case Murray is the surname (also known as a family name) and he would be born with it, quite likely it was from his father's side.  It does sound a little like Mary, but not enough that anyone with a native ear would not be able to hear the difference quite easily.  Murray can also be a male's first name which is chosen by the parents after birth.  So, he could have been Murray Murray!! (If his parent's had a sense of humor...LOL)

Andy is a shortened form or Andrew.  I don't know anything about Mandarin, but in the U.S. (and probably the UK) we often shorten a name when using it in everyday life.  My proper name is Kimberley, but my family and friends and co-workers call me Kim.  Kimberly however is on all my documents and is my legal first name.
