G and J pronunciation
How do I pronounce the g in spanish. I notice it is sometimes the normal sound in english like in for example "dog" but occasionally it is more like a j sound or a prolonged k sound. Is there a rule for this? I've heard that its to do with the letter after being a vowel or not but it doesn't seem to fit every scenario.
Thanks

Ok... you're right, there is a rule, and it's related to vowels...
G has the soft sound you find in dog, god, get, etc. most of the time, except before "e" or "i", when it has the hard sound our "j" has (like German ch)
There are a couple extra things you need to learn, if we want to use the soft sound with "e" or "i", we use a "u" in between, so "gue" and "gui" sound really like ge in get or gi in gift.
Then, to have the sound of "gu" + e/i, we change u into ü (so you know that then the u is pronounced.
examples:
- gato (ga sounds like gu in gut)
- gloria (gl sounds like in English)
- grato (gr sounds like in English, but with a Spanish r, of course)
- gema (ge sounds a little harder than he in hem/her/hen)
- gitano (gi sounds a little harder than he in he or hi in his)
- guerra (gue sounds like ge in get)
- agüita (güi sounds something like wi in witty)
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Daniel.

The G before the vowels A, O and U, sounds like if it was before a consonant, Ex: garganta, grillo, argumento, gordo, pregunta, agua. It's like the sound of "good".
If the G is before the vowels E and I, it sounds like the J. Ex: Argentina, gelatina, girasol, girar, German. It's like the sound of H in english, ex: Help.
And the third roule is: if G is before the U... and that "U" is before E or I, the sound is the same that the first roule. Just that the U doesn't sound. Ex: guerra, guiño, guiso, seguir, erguido, seguera.

"G" and "J" are both aspirated sounds in Spanish before vowels.
Gente / Gerundio
Juan / Jaramillo
but not "Gloria"

Buenos puntos Daniel, pero mejor que agarre una sesión porque la fonética y muchas otras cosas no se pueden enseñar por escrito.
