I never heard the expression 'split my sides'. My idiom book does not have it either.

They are pretty much the same . The difference is petty. The expression more common is = I cracked up laughing.

"split ones sides laughing" and "split ones sides" mean the same thing, but most of the time the word 'laughing' will be included.
