http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_number_of_native_speakers Counting by number of native speakers, (Mandarin) Chinese is the most common, by a wide margin. Spanish is second. English is only the third most common. It is followed by Hindi, Arabic, and Portuguese.
