단어 is more like 'word' in English whereas 어휘 is closer to 'vocabulary', so I think you will use 단어 more in actual conversations.

For example;
아.. 그 단어가 생각이 안나 ! Ah.. that words doesn't occur to me...

영어단어를 외우고 있어요 I have been memorizing some English words.

어휘실력이 부족해서 요즘 동의어와 반의어도 다 외우고 있어요.
