They are synonyms in certain way,although 'tapar' means "to cover with a lid" and 'cubrir' means "to cover(with anything)" But you can use them as synonyms,for example,you can say: "Jorge tapó el frasco de mayonesa" o "Jorge cubrió el frasco de mayonesa"(Jorge covered the mayonnaisse bottle),so they can be synonyms,but they can also have a different meaning contextually,if being specific about the way the object is being covered. Well these are two different words, 'Tapar' is to cover something in the sense of blocking for example a hole. "Cubrir" means to cover something like in a way of protection or to set apart everything else from the thing you want to cover. Here are some examples. Tapa ese hoyo de la pared= Block that hole from the wall ( in this case you must block the hole with something or fix the wall) Cubre ese hoyo de la pared=Cover that hole from the wall ( in this case you can only put something like a poster to cover the hole ) Debes cubrir a tu familia =You must protect your family ( in this case "tapar"is out of the equation otherwise it woulf be-you must block your family-) Debes tapar la fuga de gas=You must cover the gas leak( in this case if you use "cubrir" it could mean to hide the gas leak) Cubre esa manzana de chocolate=Cover that apple in chocolate Tapa esa manzana de chocolate< This one doesn't make sense Now talking about , peanut butter, a bottle, etc you always use "Tapar" when you close the lid.

Es algo difícil de explicar, en teoría son sinónimos, pero se usan en algunos casos en contextos diferentes, para mí la diferencia en especial es que: *TAPAR es más utilizado para algo que tiene un "hueco" o un "hoyo", y *CUBRIR no necesita tener un hueco (es como poner algo encima de eso)... Por ejemplo: -¡Tapa la olla para que no se enfríe el almuerzo!, -Aprieta bien la tapa del frasco de pintura para que no se derrame; -Yo cubro mi cama con una sábana. -Pinta bien para que cubra completamente el color original. -María cubre el acné con maquillaje, Te doy otro ejemplo. Si a mi me dicen: -Cubre la olla, yo lo que haría es ponerle algo encima ya sea un trapo, una tela, como intentando esconderla, algo asi jajajajjajjaa... Si me dicen: - Tapa la olla, yo lo que haría es ponerle la Tapa. ;)
