i wanted to know if we can use both expressions here Last night james told me about (robbing/having robbed) an old woman in his teenage years

They both can be fine, but they can have a different meaning. "Told me about robbing" means he described what happened during the robbery. "Told me about having robbed" means he told you that it happened, but maybe didn't describe the actual events.
