Чтобы is used for the Russian subjunctive mood. In English, we have a subjunctive mood, but it is rarely used these days. To refresh your memory, the subjunctive is used for situations with an element of uncertainty and things of a personal nature – advice, wishes, hopes, desires, requests, and commands. 1) Он крутой парень, у него есть милая улыбка и сильные мышцы. Я хочу, чтобы он поженился на мне. He is a cool guy... he has a cute smile and strong muscles. I want him to marry me. 1) If you want somebody else to do something, it is necessary to use "чтобы". It is impossible to say "я хочу его пожениться на мне". This girl is hoping that her crush will marry her. 2) Я хочу, чтобы он оставил хотя бы порцию ужина. I want him to leave at least a serving of dinner for me. 3) Учитель велел, чтобы ученик извинился перед обиженным одноклассником. The teacher demanded (that) the student apologized to his insulted classmate. This is a command. 4) If you listen to a high official's Russian (someone like Vladimir Putin), then you might hear this: Важно, чтобы ваша работа была выполнена в срок. It is important/imperative that work is done on time. Желательно, чтобы всё прошло по плану. It is desirable that everything goes according to plan.

Mostly as a subordinating conjunction that expresses the idea of "X wishes that Y do someting" or "X did something to achieve something else". The usage changes depending on whether it is the same person in both parts or different. Same person give you infinitive, different "actors" require past tense to form "subjunctive". First, here's a pattern for a generic "action to achieve something": - Я учу русский, чтобы смотреть русские фильмы. ~ I learn Russian to watch Russian films. - Он переводит фильмы, чтобы я их смотрел.~ He translates films for me to watch them - Она попросила меня посмотреть этот фильм / чтобы я посмотрел этот фильм ~ She asked me to watch that film. Normally, if you can insert "in order to", it usually means you cannot avoid using "чтобы". With "want", "dream" and so on, don't use "чтобы" if the person is the same: - Я хочу пойти в кино ~ I want to go to the movies - Она хочет, чтобы я пошёл в кино. ~ She wants me to go to the movies That's all, basically. The pattern works even for mind-screwing cases: - Для успеха нашего дела совершенно необходимо, ЧТОБЫ нужный человек ОКАЗАЛСЯ на другой стороне реки в момент подачи сигнала = For the success of our mission, it is absolutely vital that a certain required person be on the other side of the river at the moment the signal is sent. P.S. There is also "для того, чтобы" which has similar meaning.

Also there is a construction "чтоб(ы) + past tense verb...!". It is an order or command in the future tense. But it is really harsh. Чтобы завтра пришли! = Come tomorrow!
